What Are Forged Shafts?

Forged shafts are load-bearing components used to transmit torque, rotation, and mechanical power within equipment and machinery. They are commonly used in drive systems, gear assemblies, and rotating equipment. Typical shaft applications include drive shafts, transmission shafts, and rotating equipment components.

Materials for Forged Shafts

Common alloy steels used in forged shafts include:


4140 Alloy Steel
Used when strength and toughness are required throughout the entire shaft.

  • through-hardenable

  • high strength and fatigue resistance

  • suitable for shafts under continuous load


8620 Alloy Steel
Used when surface wear resistance is required along with a tough core.

  • commonly used with carburizing

  • hard outer surface after heat treatment

  • tough internal core


Selecting between 4140 and 8620 depends on whether the shaft requires through-section strength or a wear-resistant surface with a resilient core.


How Forged Shafts Are Manufactured

We produce forged shafts using hammer forging and press forging, depending on part geometry, tolerances, and production requirements.


Hammer forging is typically used for short- to medium-volume runs and more complex geometries.

Press forging is used when more controlled deformation and tighter tolerances are required.
