What Is Closed-Die Forging?
Closed-die forging—also known as impression-die forging—is a manufacturing process in which heated steel is placed between precision dies that contain the shape of the finished component. As force is applied, the material flows into the die cavities, producing a forging that closely matches the desired geometry.
Unlike open-die forging, where the material is shaped between flat or simple dies, closed-die forging uses specially designed tooling to produce consistent, repeatable components with complex shapes.
The force used to shape the steel may be applied by either a forging hammer or a forging press. Both methods use impression dies, and the most appropriate process depends on the component design, material, production requirements, and performance objectives.

How the Closed-Die Forging Process Works
Closed-die forging typically follows several manufacturing steps.
1. Billet preparation
Steel billets are cut to size and heated to forging temperature, allowing the material to deform without melting.
2. Die placement
The heated billet is positioned between precision upper and lower dies that contain the impression of the finished component.
3. Forging operation
A forging hammer or forging press applies force, causing the heated steel to flow into the die cavities and form the desired shape. The choice between hammer forging and press forging depends on the application and manufacturing requirements.
4. Flash formation and trimming
As the dies close, excess material flows outside the impression and forms flash. This material is removed during trimming.
5. Secondary operations
Depending on customer requirements, components may undergo machining, heat treatment, inspection, surface finishing, or additional manufacturing processes before shipment.
The result is a forged component with refined grain flow, excellent mechanical properties, and geometry that closely matches the finished design.

In reality, closed-die forging describes the tooling—not the equipment used to apply force.
