What Is Closed-Die Forging?

Closed-die forging—also known as impression-die forging or press forging—is a forging process in which heated, but not liquified, metal is placed into dies that contain the shape of the final component. As force is applied by a press, the metal flows into the die cavities and takes on the geometry of the die.


Because the metal is enclosed by the die during the forging process, closed-die forging can produce complex shapes with excellent dimensional accuracy.


Closed-die forging is widely used to manufacture high-strength components because the process:

How the Closed-Die Forging Process Works

A forging hammer or press applies force to the billet, causing the metal to flow and fill the die cavity.


4. Flash formation and trimming

As the dies close, excess material flows out of the die cavity and forms flash. This excess material is trimmed away after forging.


5. Secondary operations

Depending on the application, forged components may undergo additional processes such as machining, heat treatment, or surface finishing.


The result is a forged component with excellent mechanical properties and strong grain flow aligned with the shape of the part.
